For years, the...Cases like this are all too common. For years, the people of the United States turned a blind eye to that factory up the road. After all, it provided employment for many of the local residents. Yes occasionally there was a bad smell, but nobody ever thought to check the drinking water. The government did those things, didn’t they?

Today, most Americans realize the government does not do those things. Our leaders have been too busy running for re-election and collecting campaign donations from corporate polluters. They simply do not have the time, or will, to actually regulate them. Why should they, “Trust came with the Donation”. They had other, larger, boondoggles where they could easily waste our tax dollars.

Most of US will have cancer or have someone in the immediate family that does. Is it the polluted air, water or our food that has the incidence of this deadly disease on the rise? Many medical researchers think the answer is “All of the above”

It has been proven that government help is slow to arrive and ineffective when it does. We need to take responsibility for our own safety. First, we need to make sure that our local air and water are safe. That means they have to be tested.

Contact a local teaching university and ask them if they would analyze some samples for your community. Voice your concerns about the safety of your local environment. If they cannot do it for you, ask them who will. Be patient, you will find the help you need. Take samples of water from a pond or stream near your local factory. Get samples from local wells. Pick some grass or weeds from alongside the factories fence. Get it all analyzed, it may save your life, or your childrens'.

We must learn how to take legal action against local industrial polluters ourselves. We need to get involved. Take the first few steps yourself; become familiar with the problems and obstacles.

When you are familiar with all aspects the problem, go online. There are many established groups willing to help you organize your neighborhood. Do not sit still, time works against you.

The important thing is that you become an environmental activist. Take an interest in your community, your village, your city and never take anything for granted. You will find many willing friends and neighbors to help. Have faith, you may not be able to change the world, but you can change your neighborhood.

If we have learned anything, it is the fact that corporations will say and do most anything to protect their bottom line. When it comes to our health and the environment, trust is a luxury we can’t afford.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11894005875614974726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297844450444112184.post-223246578258329222010-09-13T11:54:50.026-04:002010-09-13T11:54:50.026-04:00Thanks for the comment Mary...I was fried...nothin...Thanks for the comment Mary...I was fried...nothing to do yesterday...wanted to watch the game. so seldom do. W’s policies. They clearly did not work. We had staggering debt. The real estate market was about to collapse. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had cost trillions. Our banking system was about to collapse. General Motors and Chrysler were bankrupt. Employment was dropping like a stone. Short-term credit became frozen and small business, farmers and corporate America lost the financial ability to operate freely. Our balance of trade was way out of balance. Our nation was on the brink of a financial catastrophe similar to the Great Depression.

My personal view is, “Come up with a new bold plan that offers a clear choice for US voters or get out of the way”. President Obama was elected because people wanted a new direction. They rebuked the Bush/Cheney philosophy with their votes. Going back to that failed philosophy would be insane. We need jobs, jobs and more jobs. We need to correct trade agreements that have allowed out foreign debt to balloon out of control. We need to eliminate corporate control of our elected officials and make them work for the people once more. Our country needs a lot of things, but we do not need to return to the past.

The country would be much better off if all politicians sat down and made a sincere attempt to solve the problems at hand. Both parties have spent too much time arguing politics in the House of Representatives and in the Senate and not enough time representing the people. A little F now and then probably isn’t worth the giant fines that have been levied on the networks in the recent past. F-This and F-That and you F-ing Jerk seem to be ingrained in the language these days.

Still, I am haunted by the words of Thomas Jefferson:
“Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.”

Jefferson knew there had to be limits. His writings speak of liberty tempered with common sense. We need some of that common sense in our legislators, in our courts and in the broadcast networks.

It would be comforting to know that our children and sensitive adults can be free to have a place where they are not forced to listen to surprise assaults on their sensibilities by those demanding their rights at the expense of other people’s rights.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11894005875614974726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297844450444112184.post-27412862653305175032010-08-26T16:29:04.677-04:002010-08-26T16:29:04.677-04:00"...that government of the people, by the peo..."...that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." President Lincoln gave US these words...had he only known, "The Republic did not perish...it was sold by the politicians elected to manage its affairs". They bartered our "Rights" one at a time for the money to fund their re-election campaigns.

I'm not thinking it was a conscious plot, it was simply expedient. Corporations had the money the politicians needed and they were prepared to give it... for some... consideration. And so, this government of the people became a government of the corporation. The bottom line became the new Bill of Rights and the “Trickle down Theory” was put into play.

To some degree, what is good for corporate America is good for the people, especially in productive years. Goodies and gravy did trickle down. However, in a harsh recession, corporations tend to downsize and conserve assets. That leaves the People, US, out in the cold without proper representation.

With no government supervision, things like the egg recall and the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico simply happen. That is all we get to see lately, arguments, insults and outrageous demands, not cooperation or sincere efforts to improve our economy. Are we paying them to debate their political differences or work to solve national issues?

We cannot allow our political views to keep us from solving the problems at hand. People are suffering, there are hungry, homeless and unemployed in this land of plenty.
